Outline and Characteristics of the University

The university became a women's college in 1928 and was named Hiroshima Women's College. Before that it was the Hiroshima Prefectural Girl's High School, started in 1914. It attracted students from all over western Japan in the prewar days, since there were very few women's colleges as that time.

In 1950, as part of the reforms of post-war Japan, the college was reorganized as Hiroshima Women's Junior College. Then in 1965, it became Hiroshima Women's University, with two faculties, the Faculty of Letters and the Faculty of Home economics. Although the majority of students come from Hiroshima prefecture, there are students from all over Japan enrolled, not to mention foreign students from such countries as China, Korea, Taiwan, and South America.

The campus is situated in a quiet district of Hiroshima City near the port, which has boat and ferry services to various islands in the Inland Sea, as well as other ports in Japan. Because of its close proximity to downtown Hiroshima, students can visit various museums and participate in cultural events held in the city.
